Джозеф Смит Флетчер (Joseph Smith Fletcher) родился в Галифаксе (Йоркшир). В 18 лет отправился в Лондон в надежде стать известным писателем. Устроился работать журналистом, где почти десять лет публиковал статьи о жизни английской провинции под псевдонимом Сын земли (Son of the Soil). Позднее, когда Флетчер стал популярным писателем, в его романах продолжает появляться родной Йоркшир.

Он также является автором стихов, биографий и исторических романов, которые в сочетании с детективами на момент смерти составили 100 томное собрание сочинений. Например, за пять лет с 1920 по 1925 год он написал 17 романов о которых рецензент в Нью-Йорк Таймс написал, Каждый из романов гениален, умело построенный рассказ с отличными сюжетом и своей изюминкой, свежие с разработанными персонажами.
